How to Choose a Spotting Scope

How to Choose a Spotting Scope

Angled vs. Straight

  • Angled spotting scopes are comfortable for extended glassing, especially when viewing uphill, and easier to share between users.
  • Straight spotting scopes are more compact, quicker to align with your target, and often preferred for glassing from a vehicle.

Magnification & Lens Size

  • Magnification Range: Match magnification to your primary use. Lower magnification (20–30x) is ideal for scanning wide terrain, while higher magnification (40–60x) helps identify fine details at longer distances.
  • Objective Lens Diameter: The number after the “x” represents the objective lens diameter (measured in millimeters). Larger objective lenses gather more light, helping produce a brighter, clearer image.
