Loved the mid-waterproof Sawtooth II so much I bought a pair of the low hikers 5 days later!
I have problem feet, with L foot slightly longer but more narrow than the R, and a R foot with excess calcification on the dorsal aspect over the metatarsals due to an old foot injury. Recently, I have injured my R foot again and found all my old shoes lacking the support I need now despite several pairs of Superfeet in green, blue and trail (purple). A friend recommended the Sawtooth, so I tried on the Sawtooth II mid-level boots at REI and then ordered them online the next day right at the start of their amazing May sale. They fit so well, and seemed to hug both my L narrow foot and my R much wider injured foot. I somehow got them 2 days later....started to wear them without Superfeet....and walked in them for a couple miles with very little foot pain and WITHOUT orthotics! I work as a PT, walk on average 4 miles a day, am standing for at least 70% of the time that I am working, basically on my feet a lot. So, I went back to REI and purchased the low Sawtooth II hikers on sale (non-waterproof for more breathability in summer). They are not the lightest shoe, but to be able to wear a shoe that hugs the foot, without switching out inserts, and have support and stability on pavement as well as on the trails (which I haven't tried yet due to recovering injury) is already more than I can ask for. And they were on sale. Oh - and size 9.5 women's? No problem!
I emailed the company and they said they run a bit snug, so I ordered a half size bigger than normal and wide width-they are perfect! The most comfy shoe right out of the box! Can’t wait to order more! I definitely recommend this shoe!
I bought a pair of these b/c my old Sawtooth's had finally given up the ghost. Nice construction and solid as before, but MUCH narrower. It's not just that I broke in my old shoes -- you can actually see it by comparing the soles to each other. Going to try and get another pair of the 1st Gens from another supplier. Unfortunately, from my perspective, another case of "new and DIS-improved".
I bought a pair of these walking shoes on the recommendation of a thru hiker for our 1300 mile walk on the GR5 last year. They were perfect! They were water proof and super comfortable. I used them for training here in Vermont for 3 months and for the first 2/3 of the GR5. I bought another pair for the last 5 weeks in the Alps. The first pair might have made it but I wanted to be sure. This second pair were delivered to me by a friend from the states because I could not find them in France. This pair is still going strong!
